METRIC MASS ATLAS / 08

The city, at its own scale.

One model unit equals one metre. Actual OpenStreetMap building footprints, streets and waterways share a local coordinate system. Landmarks are shown at their modelled scale.

Where height is missing, surrounding buildings use 3.2 m per recorded storey or a 12 m fallback. Height-source colours apply to the surroundings.

Explore 289 architectural field stops across Greater London. Central London has continuous surroundings; more distant destinations have local context patches. Actual footprints remain at their original scale. Nearby areas load within a memory budget, and areas off screen are released. Photos load only when you open a building card. Some stops have location markers while their dedicated models await verification.

This is an architectural massing model, not a measured survey or BIM model. Terrain is flat. Roofs and landmark details include approximations, described on their cards. Reference photographs may show earlier conditions. Use Directions to plan your walk.

Mark a building as visited to keep a field record. All 275 modelled destinations reveal exterior colours from the ground up. Representative wall and roof palettes follow each building’s material character. Architectural form studies are progressively refined against references; the card describes the remaining approximations. Card notes distinguish photo-informed colours from provisional palettes. The 14 location-only stops keep visit records without a material reveal. These are approximate material studies, not photo-mapped or surveyed facades. Unvisited landmarks use the selected map palette. Choose Atlas, Blueprint or Night from Style; visited buildings keep their reference-inspired colours. The map style is remembered in this browser. Reduced-motion settings disable the reveal and palette transitions. Visiting never changes the model geometry or Rhino downloads. Visit records are saved only in this browser; clearing site data removes them.

All 275 modelled destinations unlock decorative walkers close to the architecture. Suitable flat model surfaces also carry rooftop activity; curved roofs and spires do not. Schematic trees appear at 274 destinations with clear nearby ground. The 14 location-only stops retain a visit record without a scene. Zoom in or use Look closer on their cards. People and Trees & planting can be switched off separately. Only nearby visible scenes appear, with a fixed limit of 360 people and 500 trees. The selected building takes priority. These scenes are an artistic interpretation, not live visitor data, surveyed tree positions, public roof-access information or walking directions. Figures stay still with reduced motion and are hidden for imported models.

YOUR MODEL / YOUR CITY

Edit in Rhino. Explore it here.

Download a regional ZIP or a building's .3dm file, then edit it in Rhino. Keep its origin and orientation to place it back on the map.

Supports Rhino files containing mesh objects or render meshes.

Your models are saved only in this browser on this device. They are not uploaded to a server or shared across devices. Downloads are mesh models in Rhino 6 format, also readable in Rhino 7. Convert new NURBS objects with the Mesh command and include the meshes when saving.

RHINO 6 / 7

Download city regions.

The city is split into central regions and outer context patches. All files use metres and the same city origin. Download a ZIP, extract it and open the model in Rhino.

To edit the whole city, import the required regional files into one Rhino document. The website accepts one file for city replacement. If your merged file exceeds 100 MB or 3 million triangles, simplify it with ReduceMesh before saving. Individual building downloads are available on their cards.
